The Countdown Begins...

Sunday is the day I'll hit the road for Texas (I'll be back on July 26 & Aug 6th though). I'm trying to get my mind wrapped around the idea that I'll be leaving my hometown, and in doing so it has made me a little nervous. So much of my identity is based around being a working class kid from the Eastside of Detroit. So much of my network is centered around being a Cass Tech High School and University of Michigan grad. What happens when those things are foreign to everyone around you?

When people talk about the Great Migration of Blacks from the South to rustbelt cities like Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Detroit I completely understand because my family lived through that. The culture and ideas that come from this experience and living in Texas are much different. But a difference that I am ready for nonetheless.  It's also weird to be leaving Detroit when I think about the fact that it will take intelligent, honest, and motivated people to make Detroit a city for all and not just the "have nots" and "have", as it currently is. It scares me that even I would leave the city for the bright lights and greener pastures of another market even though I clearly understand what the community is going through and what it'll take for it to improve. It almost makes the Lebron James debacle seem much more reasonable.

Not really.
