In an effort to be more involved with my blog and give something to people who may be looking take away something reasonably meaningful from my blog, I want to put you up on some things for the month.
What I'm reading:
Tattoos on The Hear: The Power of Boundless Compassion by Gregory Boyle
This is my second time reading "Tattoos on the Heart" as I was originally introduced to the book by my mentor Professor Greg Markus and a brief interview by the author from "All Things Considered" from NPR. I think its a worthy read because of the depth that Boyle talks about compassion and redemption for even the least of the. Boyle, who is the founder of the Homeboy Industries, a self described "gang member rehabilitation center" designed to provide ex bangers with job skills and support in Los Angeles, talks about why this work is aligned with the Christian tradition of love in others and reaching back to pull others up. Besides the value that I see within it as a servants of the community, you can find lessons on compromise and learning from others who come from different walks of life.
What I'm watching:
Treme (9pm Sundays on HBO)
If you missed out on the tour de force that was HBO's The Wire, which ran from 2001 to 2008 and delved into the underbelly of the Baltimore drug trade and the social and political factors that propeled, you have a chance to revisit some of the themes in Treme. The story of post Katrina New Orleans, Treme deals with how the city and its people attempt to get on with their lives and culture following the storm. Whats beautiful about Treme is that its about the culture of the city and how all of things like food & music fit into the citizens lives and their healing. The season premier was situated in the fall of 2006, 13 months after the storm. It also featured a nice segment about New Orleans "bounce" music (the fast paced Hip-Hop made famous by early Manny Fresh, Juvenile & Lil' Wayne) and how it is an heir to the musical culture of New Orleans.
What I'm wearing:
It's Spring! Tis the season for pique Ralph Lauren polos and Sperry boat shoes. What I've added also added for today's outfit is a classic Detroit Pistons' Starter snapback hat that I picked up from Ebay. Snaphats are whats hot right now, but its kind of cool to have one for even when this fade dies out b/c the team logos have changed so frequently.
