So in doing my one on ones, I've noticed that Texas is still part of the Wild West (somewhat). Working in the Acre's Homes and Sunnyside neighborhoods of Houston has exposed me to alot of the problems that the Black and poor community of Houston face, but also that it has its unique quirks. One of the most interesting things I've noticed are the horses.
Acre's homes has a tradition of Black cowboys and farming that extends pre-World War 1 and the emancipation of slaves in Texas. Because Houston has no zoning laws and very loose conditions on animals in neighborhoods, there are alot of people who keep horses as pets or as second forms of transportation. While some people are irritated by the horses, a lot of the neighbors don't really have a problem with the horses. I've seen horses, cows, a swamp just a few feet away from a Beauty Supply store and long horns on the front of a truck. Houston is very different than Detroit.
I really wish I could have gotten the picture of the horse tied up to the post at the Cricket Wireless store.
