The Professional Left

According to the old adages, "everything is supposedly bigger and better in Texas". Texas is the home of non-comformist, who are blazing the trail of American independence.  Texas is also very partisan. Very much so that it makes me question coming out here and working as a community organizer.

Part of the allure of moving to Texas and working for the Black community here in Houston is that the community organizing/social justice community is wide open here. All the virtues of Texas' "wild west" ethos can be exhibited in the state of social justice/ urban renewal work in Houston. Its not like Detroit where people move here because they think its cool to live in a City that needs all of the creative minds it can get. Its not like New York or Chicago, where the big city vibe and big market and diversity drives leaders. Its Houston; its the southwest.

THE SCHOOLS IN HOUSTON DIDN'T FULLY INTEGRATE RACIALLY UNTIL THE EARLY 1980S!!!!! I'm in a completely different world.
